The success of the 50th Soham Carnival & Heavy Horse Show 2003 made local charity and youth organisations very happy indeed. The event raised a record-breaking £4,750 and cheques were presented to nine local organisations by the carnival organisers, the Soham Benevolent Association, at a special presentation evening held at Soham Fire Station, Fountain Lane on Tuesday 15th July 2003. The association presented the East Anglia Children’s Hospice with £4,000 in memory of murdered Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. Other recipients were the St. John Ambulance Soham Combined Division, 1220 (March) Squadron ATC Marching Band, Soham Fenlander Majorette Troupe, Soham Holiday Playscheme, Soham Association of Commerce & Trade Christmas Light Fund, Soham Scouts, Soham Guides and the East Cambridgeshire link of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Yvonne Bedford, secretary of the Soham Benevolent Association, said: ‘The Carnival was very well attended this year and a good day for the whole community of Soham. We are very pleased with the amount of money raised and the worthwhile local causes that have benefited from it. We would really like to thank our sponsors and all who helped in any way to make the day such a success especially as it was the 50th Anniversary of the event.” |
